Kawatiri Coastal Trail
If you’re looking for a way to explore the natural beauty of New Zealand’s West Coast, the Kawatiri Cycle Trail is the perfect adventure. This trail offers cyclists, walkers and runners of all levels the opportunity to experience the rugged landscapes, rich history, and vibrant communities that make this part of New Zealand so unique.
The Kawatiri Cycle Trail is a recently developed trail that connects the coastal town of Westport with the charming inland town of Charleston. The trail stretches for approximately 55 kilometers, winding through a diverse range of landscapes, from coastal forests and riversides to historic sites and small communities. Cape Foulwind is uniquely placed towards the middle of the track, which can be found across the road from our driveway at Cape Foulwind Cabin.
The trail is part of New Zealand’s nationwide network of cycle trails, known as the Nga Haerenga (The Journeys), which aims to provide cyclists with safe, scenic routes across the country. Kawatiri, the Maori name for the Buller River, reflects the cultural significance of the area and its connection to the land and waterways that the trail traverses.
The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is divided into sections, making it accessible for cyclists/walkers/runners of varying abilities and allowing you to choose how much of the trail you want to explore. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect along the way:
- Westport to Carters Beach: This section is ideal for beginners and families. It’s a flat, easy ride along a sealed path that follows the Buller River to its mouth at Carters Beach. The coastal views along this stretch are stunning, and Carters Beach is a great spot to stop for a picnic or a swim.
- Carters Beach to Omau: As you leave Carters Beach, the trail starts to offer more variety in terms of terrain. You’ll go through native bush and along rugged coastal cliffs, with spectacular views of the Tasman Sea. This section is slightly more challenging but still suitable for walkers and most riders.
- Omau to Charleston: This is where the trail truly shines for those looking for a bit more adventure. The path winds through dense rainforest and past limestone formations, offering a sense of immersion in the West Coast’s wild landscapes. Charleston, your final destination, is a historic gold-mining town that now serves as a gateway to the Paparoa National Park.
Each section of the trail is well-marked, and there are plenty of places to stop along the way to take in the scenery, grab a bite to eat, or learn about the area’s history through interpretive signs and displays.
One of the great things about the Kawatiri Cycle Trail is that it’s accessible year-round. However, the West Coast’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to check the forecast before you set out and pack accordingly. Layers, a waterproof jacket, and plenty of water are recommended.
The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is more than just a walk or bike ride; it’s a journey through some of the most beautiful and culturally rich landscapes in New Zealand. Whether you’re travelling the entire trail or just a section, you’ll be treated to stunning views, fascinating history, and the warm hospitality of the West Coast communities.

We recommend making a loop of going on the Kawatiri Coastal trail to Tauranga Bay and coming back along the Lighthouse and Seal Colony Walkway (or visa versa). This will take about 1 and half hours when walking.
